After four years of development and testing, on June 5, 2002, the Mozilla Organization released the first stable version of the open-source browser. A year later, in July 2003, the group which was initially funded by America Online's Netscape division was spun-off from the AOL Time Warner media conglomerate, forming the fully-independent Mozilla Foundation.
